week 4 & 5
had serious computer/uploading problems. Here is week 4/5.
In week 4 (the colourful eyeball) I chose to respond to the stencil of a heart done in the previous week. I thought the use of body parts as a subject for a stencil was interesting and unusual, introducing a more abstract approach to stencil art as many are satirical and in some ways political. So I decided to do something a bit different. I also thought the flat diagram of the eye had some interesting shapes. If I was to improve this one I would probably use more realistic colours - these ones are a little bit random.
For week 5 (the face) I responded to the stencil of the girl with a tongue full of tentacles. I thought it was really quirky and cute so I decided to do one of a girl with an egg on her face. Technical errors got the better of me in this one as I cut out parts of the stencil incorrectly. I think this would look a lot better with more layers as I would have been able to include more detail in the facial features and give more definition to the egg. However, it wasn't a complete failure!

week 5 Dan
Stencil 5 - Nick
In Grohl We Trust - This week I was responding to all the pop icons and superheros that have been coming up in the designs. I thought about who I would consider a modern day hero. When I searched images of Dave Grohl there were lots with him looking a little like Jesus with his long hair an' all. So I played on this. The stencil turned out pretty good, though I dont know if I like the purple and I would have liked a little more time to allow the paint to dry properly between layers.
week 2
Due to photo uploading problems I am uploading week 2 now. A bit late, sorry.
In this week I responded to the squid stencil sprayed in week one. Sea creatures work really well because they have lots of scales or segments which allows you to pay lots of attention to detail and the more detailed stencils are, the better they look aesthetically.

Emily - Stencils 4 and 5
i had problems uploading my photo from week 4, but here it is.
'the joker' is the 4 layer, the top layer didnt work out the way i wanted, i accidentally sprayed it the wrong way. oops! but i think it still looks ok.
The 5 layer is the Kombie van (more transport!), which i think is my best yet.. although the silver layer doesn't stand out much, which is a shame.
i think it works because of its simplicity which i've learned are usually the most effective stencils.

BRUCE LEE vs. Scuba Man:
This week i worked with an image of Bruce Lee. I made the stencil A3, which allowed me to retain a little more detail but I also tried a couple of new techniques. To respond to the scuba diver from last week, I put contact over the old design and cut around it so I could paint over it without losing it. I also played with the pink specks up the top. I did this by spraying into the lid then throwing the paint down, instead of spraying directly onto the board.
Im really happy with how this stencil turned out.
